Fishing Technique

Trolling

Trolling is arguably one of the most effective ways to catch fish. Not only does it fill the cooler, but it’s equally exciting for beginners and experts alike. Trolling may be one of the most popular fishing techniques out there, but there seems to be a belief that it has a lot to do with luck. Today, you’ll see how good preparation and a few tricks up your sleeve can make any trolling fishing trip a success.

Of course, trolling has a lot more to it than just dragging a few lines through the water. Depending on where you’re fishing – and the species you’re targeting – you can troll for fish in a wide variety of ways. From essential fishing gear to picking your spots and presentation tactics, the options are endless.

Spinning

Spin fishing is an angling technique where a spinnerbait, a type of hybrid fishing lure with at least one freely rotating blade, is used to entice the fish to bite.

When the line is reeled back, the spinnerbait blades will spin passively with the oncoming water flow, in turn stirring up a significant amount of turbulence and noise, which transmit through the water and provoke predatory fish to strike the lure out of their foraging as well as territorial instincts. In this technique, the slack before and after each jerk allows the rod tip to move further than the lure's movement, creating a more natural and unpredictable motion. The angler delivers a non-stop series of rhythmic strokes that jerk the lure by snapping slack line, causing it to zigzag about six inches (15 cm) to alternating sides without pause.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a unique method of catching fish that uses a lightweight artificial fly to mimic insects or small baitfish. Unlike regular fishing where the weight of the lure carries your line, fly fishing uses the weight of a special fly line to deliver your cast with precision and grace.

To fly fish successfully, we need to master four key areas: selecting the right gear, learning proper casting techniques, choosing effective flies, and understanding where fish live. The process involves using a flexible fly rod, specialized reel, and weighted line to present our artificial fly in a natural way that convinces fish it’s real food.

Bait Fishing

When it comes to choosing the right bait, it’s like selecting a mouthwatering buffet for the fish. You want to entice them with options that will make their taste buds tingle and their instinct kick in. Understanding fish behavior is crucial in this process.

Different fish are attracted to different types of bait, so it’s important to do your research. From live bait like worms and minnows to artificial bait like lures and soft plastics, there are plenty of alternative bait options to consider. Some fish are more attracted to movement, while others prefer a specific scent. By understanding the behavior of the fish you’re targeting, you can choose the bait that will be most effective in enticing them.
